America just got its first taste of the red, white and blue version of “Love Island,” the hit British-import reality show now on CBS every weeknight for the next five weeks.
Here are the craziest moments from the inaugural episode.
The cash prize
Unknown up until this point, the show’s winning couple will get a whopping $100,000 if they’re the last ones standing. On the OG version across the pond, the winners get true love, and only 50,000 pounds, or about $63,000 to share. Talk about a good exchange rate.
Cashel’s ‘organic’ love diet
Cashel, a barefoot “weird guy” who likes to drum naked, called himself a “walking contradiction” during his memorable introduction.
“I’ve never done a dating app,” he proudly told America. “I’m trying to find someone the organic way, and the villa could be a really chill situation for that,” which is why he went on a reality-tv show set on an island to find love.
Contestant Zac also wants an “organic” connection. Maybe it’s because he works at a grocery store.
Someone call Mike Sorrentino, we have a new twist on “The Situation.” Contestant Alana coined a term to describe her past almost-but-not-quite relationships. “I’ve been in situation-ships,” she said.
The crafty wordsmith also showed off her skills later in the episode, after coupling up with hottie-with-a-body Yaman (pronounced YAY-men). “He’s going to become my Bae-man,” she quipped.
Two men originally received no interest from the ladies.
When Cashel (Cashew?) showed up, none of the women stepped forward to show they were interested in him. Ouch. He chose Caro.
Weston, a Southern cowboy with an eye for leopard-print sets, also saw tumbleweeds from the ladies. He chose Mallory, a totally “not-crazy” analyst who already has her wedding planned and her children’s names picked out. (She’s also looking to date John Mayer, a notoriously terrible boyfriend. Good luck with that, Mal.)
Two men had over half the ladies step forward to show their attraction to them.
When the aforementioned Zac came on the scene, Mallory, Elizabeth and Caro — who had already coupled up with Cashel — made it clear they were down to clown. Zac chose Elizabeth.
When Michael showed up, he got a similar reaction from the ladies. Caro and Mallory, who had already coupled up, and Alexandra, stepped up to the plate. He chose Alexandra, who was single and ready to mingle with him.
Booty and the Beast
Michael likes big butts and he cannot lie. The vegan model from Miami, and dad-dog to two Frenchies, made his must-haves in a lady almost too apparent in his introduction. “I definitely look for nice booty and nice beauty,” he said, gesturing to his chiseled face.
The First Kiss
Worried that single girl Kyra, who has 24 hours to couple up with someone (i.e. steal someone’s man), Caro tried to put her man Cashel on lock — lip lock, that is.
After Kyra and Caro spoke plainly about Kyra’s interest in Cashel (we love hard K sounds on this show), Caro straddled him outside, clinging to him like a sloth on a tree. Then she planted a smooch on him and squealed in delight afterward. She said she’s really developing feelings for him, even though less than 12 hours ago she couldn’t pronounce his name, dubbing him “Cashew.”
The cliffhanger ending
Who will Kyra pick? Will she go for Western weirdo Weston and break Mallory’s heart? Will she swoop in and make Yayman her bae-man? Or, will she claim the nutty Cashel all for herself, Caro be damned?
Looks like we’ll find out tomorrow night.
