It was a night that belonged to Aretha.
On Thursday night, following the news of Aretha Franklin’s death at age 76, musicians across the country honored the legendary singer with covers of her greatest hits.
Ariana Grande and The Roots
The “God is a Woman” singer performed an emotional rendition of “Natural Woman” with the Roots in honor of the late legend on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”
Dressed in all black, Grande kept her composure as she belted out Franklin’s hit song to open the show Thursday.
Host Jimmy Fallon thanked Grande for her performance on Twitter: “I know it’s a big night for Ariana – but this is what great people do when they know we need them to be there for us.”
Thank you @ArianaGrande and @theRoots for putting together a beautiful opening of our show honoring our friend, the legendary Aretha Franklin. I know it’s a big night for Ariana – but this is what great people do when they know we need them to be there for us.
Grande stopped by the “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” to promote her new album “Sweetener,” but took time to remember Franklin after the news of her passing. She told a story of a time when the “Queen of Soul” called her.
